NID FAQ

Common questions about new National Identity registration in Sydney.

Who is eligible?

The service is for new applicants who are Bangladeshi nationals, at least 18 years old, currently living in NSW or Queensland, and able to prove Bangladeshi origin with an online-verifiable birth certificate and supporting identity records.

Can I use this service for correction or reissue?

No. Applicants who already hold an NID or previously applied should use the Bangladesh Election Commission's NID services for correction, recovery or reissue.

Must I apply online first?

Yes. Complete the online application through the NID portal before emailing the checklist documents to nid.sydney@mofa.gov.bd.

Is physical attendance required?

Yes. The Consulate reviews the emailed documents and advises an appointment for biometric enrolment.

How long does it take?

Timing depends on verification by the relevant Upazila Election Office. Once an NID number is assigned, the applicant is notified and may download the card through the NID portal.

What should I retain?

Keep the enrolment slip and portal username and password secure; they are needed to check progress and download the NID card.
